I've never thought a lot about wreaths, their origins, or why we hang them on our front doors. To me, DIY wreaths were just something beautiful to share with the outside world. However, we're all a part of a greater tradition that goes back about as far as history does. All wreaths used to be homemade - there weren't department stores that sold them during the holidays.

Wreaths weren't always hung on doors; they were worn as crowns by Etruscan rulers! You have probably seen a rendering of Julius Caesar with a laurel wreath on his head. Caesar was Roman, rather than Etruscan, but it just shows how widespread this tradition of wreaths has spread.

As we get closer to modern times, people hang wreaths that are known as harvest wreaths. They're usually made with wheat or other harvested plants. Hanging the wreath was part of a ceremony that ended with a celebration and a feast.
The wreaths that we hang on our front doors are known as advent wreaths. They're part of a Christian tradition preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. They were made of evergreens to represent everlasting life and their circular shape represents God.
As the centuries go by, however, we don't necessarily use these terms for the homemade wreaths we make for every season and holiday. Even if you don't consciously think about these traditions, it is still fun and interesting to know that we're all connected by something as simple as hanging a wreath on our door.

Oh my word! This is crazy cute. Can't wait to go to the dollar store to pick out my materials!

What a great idea for a wreath! I love anything with a lot of color. I always wondered what to do with those rattan balls. Now I know. I will be making a mess dyeing them as I do every year dyeing Easter eggs but it will be so much fun. Easy enough to make and you can other decorations as you see fit. Thanks for the instructions.

Ever go to the dollar store for one thing, see something else that you have no idea what you will do with it but that little crafter inside you tells you to get it? I saw a bag of these about a month ago and I got it. I had no idea where or when I would use it. Now I know, thank you so much.

This is such an easy craft that the kids can even help with. I love putting wreaths on front doors and this is perfect for the spring season.
