Woven Holiday Placemats

Create beautiful Woven Holiday Placemats using festive ribbon and basic sewing skills! This tutorial shows you how easy it is to make personalized placemats that can be customized for any holiday or occasion. These are especially great homemade Christmas crafts to give as gifts to friends or family!  Just follow the instructions below and before you know it you'll have your very own set of woven ribbon 12" by 18" placemats for Christmas or any other holiday you choose!
 

Materials:

  • 2 ½ yards of 2 ½ inch ribbon
  • 3 yards of contrasting or complimentary 2 ½ inch ribbon (NOTE: any width ribbon may be used; instructions are given for the 2 ½ inch ribbon)
  • Fusible interfacing
  • Pins
  • 13” x 20” (or similar size) pinnable surface (cardboard, foam core board, quilters' cut & press board)
  • 12” by 18” back
  • Thin batting (optional)
  • Cording, lace (optional)
     

Instructions:

1. Cut 7 strips of ribbon, 12 1/2” long each.

2. Cut 6 strips of contrasting ribbon, 18 1/2” long each.

3. Cut 12” by 18” fusible interfacing.

4. Place fusible interfacing on pinnable surface, fusible side up.

5. Pin 12 ½ inch strips side by side on pin board.

6. Weave 18 ½ inch strips through 12 ½ inch strips.

7. Fuse strips to interfacing.

8. Sew ribbons to interfacing.

9. Place front and back of placemat together, right sides facing.

10. Sew around, leaving space open to turn right side out.

11. Turn right side out.

12. Sew space left open for turning.
