You probably didn’t know these unexpected facts about this modern lounge equipment. Hammocks were first documented in the West Indies being used by Native Americans. The word “hammock” came from an indigenous language of Haiti which meant fishing net. However, these hammocks weren’t used for leisure back then as they are today. They were a major source of protection from disease, preventing bugs from getting on the natives as they slept. As time moved forward and Christopher Columbus made his famous trek to the New World, the hammock was one of the treasures he brought back with him to Europe. From there, the hammock became a useful military item, especially for naval ships. Sailors would use hammocks as beds in the lower decks of a ship. Of course, today they are used as a place of leisure in the sun, but I’ll bet you’re pretty happy you don’t have to sleep in one every night!
