Americans showed their passion for Halloween decorating by spending more than $1.5 billion on Halloween decorations in 2010 alone, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2010 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey. In fact, decorations were the second-largest spending category for Halloween, with candy coming in just slightly higher in terms of billions spent.
However, while Halloween spending has increased in the last couple of years and Americans are eager to celebrate, three out of 10 consumers still say the state of the U.S. economy will impact their Halloween plans this year. Nearly ninety percent said they would spend less money on Halloween overall, and thirty percent said they would re-use last year’s decorations rather than buy new ones.
“Americans are excited about Halloween but are still being frugal and pinching their pennies where they can,” said Phil Rist, Executive Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, BIGresearch.
While the economy can be stressful, many consumers are finding that Halloween is a welcome break from reality, according to NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “Halloween has provided … many Americans a chance to escape from the stress the economy has put on their family and incomes,” he said.
